Sheffield United are considering a move for exit-bound Everton midfielder Tom Davies, according to The Star.
The Toffees confirmed on Thursday 22 June that the 24-year-old will leave Goodison Park when his contract expires at the end of June after turning down a new offer.
It’s believed the Blades have Davies in their sights as their “extensive” transfer search takes place over the coming months (The Star, 23 June).
United are understood to be working within a budget of £20million for permanent signings but also have the scope for free agents and loan players.
Good luck
Most Evertonians will wish Davies well on his next challenge.
He was never really given a proper chance at Goodison Park having once been one of the most impressive highly regarded youngsters.
During the most important years of his development, he’s been confined to substitute appearances and the odd start. Now, it’s absolutely essential for the 24-year-old to head somewhere where he will be playing regular first-team football.
For the Everton board, they need to take a long and hard look at how they’ve failed Davies. He should have been a crucial part of the club moving forward.
However, due to Everton’s consistent flirts with the bottom three, the chances for the midfielder to impress have been few and far between.
It’s a scenario which cannot repeat itself. Moving forward, younger academy players need to be given the chance to progress and make an impact. With finances being tight, looking to profit from the odd wonderkid has to be the route to go down for Kevin Thelwell.
