Szoboszlai ‘approach’

Dominik Szoboszlai has not been shy in keeping his options open amid intense transfer speculation, much to the anger of the RB Leipzig hierarchy. The Hungary captain is on Newcastle United’s radar, and admitted he is open to a transfer this summer following their DFB Pokal win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Szoboszlai has a release clause in the region of £60 million, although recent reports suggest this will not be active for the current window beyond June 30. Now, Football Insider claim Newcastle have made an ‘approach’ for the 22-year-old who is also on the radar of a number of European clubs.

This is backed up by Sky Sports, who suggest a move for Szoboszlai is more likely due to the latest developments in the Maddison transfer saga. However, several reports suggest Newcastle will not budge too far on their own valuation and are not prepared to pay the release clause.

The latest Szoboszlai reports are clearly in response to the news that Tottenham are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Maddison, according to the Athletic. Personal terms are said to have already been agreed with the England international, who has one year left on his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Newcastle failed with two bids for Maddison last summer, and remain interested in the 26-year-old. However, Leicester’s valuation of £60m remains a sticking point, while it is said the attacking midfielder’s salary demands would make him the top earner at St James’ Park.

Tottenham are expected to reach an agreement with Leicester by the end of the week, and have now been named as ‘heavy favourites’ to sign the player. Their offer is likely to be £40m up front with bonuses included.
