The Pittsburgh Steelers made franchise history again, but not in the way they probably would have wanted. The Steelers have fired offensive coordinator Matt Canada, marking their first in-season coaching change since 1941.
The Steelers are fresh off a 13-10 loss against the Cleveland Browns last Sunday. The Steelers mustered just 249 yards in the defeat. However, their offensive woes have been well documented since 2021, never surpassing 400 yards of offense during the Matt Canada era.
“i can’t waste another sunday watching this abysmal steelers offense”
Matt Canada: Pittsburgh Steelers Split with Offensive Coordinator
The Pittsburgh Steelers hired Matt Canada as the offensive coordinator in 2021, a year after averaging 26 points per game on offense (12th highest mark in the NFL). However, during his first season as a play-caller, they dipped outside the top 20 regarding yards and points. They struggled rushing the ball, averaging a lowly 3.9 yards per rush attempt. The struggles continued for the Steelers’ offense in 2022, with Canada’s unit scoring 18.1 points per game and throwing a league-low 12 touchdowns. Rookie first-round pick Kenny Pickett labored in Canada’s offensive system, tossing seven touchdowns against nine interceptions.
Pickett and Canada’s troubles compounded in 2023, leading to the offensive coordinator getting the mid-season boot. The Steelers head into Week 12 as the 28th team in points scored and yards gained. Pickett has thrown just six touchdowns in ten games while completing 61% of his passes. Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Steelers will promote QB coach Mike Sullivan and RB coach Eddie Faulkner as the co-offensive coordinators due to the Matt Canada firing.
