The Wizards are reportedly open to moving veteran G Tyus Jones – should the Suns be in play?

Could the Phoenix Suns still be in the market for a traditional point guard?

It’s certainly not out of the question – especially behind the recent benching of Jordan Goodwin.

There are still pressing questions even through that development: Do the Suns have enough ball-handlers as it is? Is a traditional point guard one of the most dire needs this squad has? Who’s the best player they can even get with a lack of obtusely positive assets?

Those are all valid questions, but the honest truth is Phoenix’s front office will kick tires on all potential avenues to improve the squad ahead of the trade deadline on Feb. 8.

Among the players who could be had by Phoenix: Washington Wizards guard Tyus Jones.

The first-year starting point guard is believed to be a potential trade chip that the Wizards can shop to contenders according to Hoopswire insider Sam Amick:

“The Wizards are believed to be open to trading point guard Tyus Jones as they believe he could bring back some picks and perhaps another young player from a contender, sources said.”

While the Suns may not “need” a traditional point, it once again is worthwhile to gauge all options.

Jones is as steady as they come when it comes to supporting guard play, averaging 12.5 PPG and 5.4 APG in 31 games thus far (both on pace to be career-bests) all while boasting efficient shooting splits.

Jones – widely regarded as one of the best backup point guards in the league since he arrived to Memphis – has also never had a single season averaging one or more turnover per game.

Jones also had a potentially stout audition in Phoenix on Dec. 17- scoring 22 points and dishing out 11 assists in a Wizards loss to the Suns.

The Suns should express interest in the Wizards guard if he does in fact become available – but would they be able to outbid a fellow contender such as the Philadelphia 76ers?
