One college football insider has questions regarding Virginia Tech’s secondary.
Things are set up rather well for the Virginia Tech football team heading into the 2024 season. A large amount of retainment along with potential impact transfers have hopes high in Blacksburg going to the post-spring practice break.
Despite all of that, like even the top teams in the country, there are still questions and even concerns for Brent Pry’s team. One college football insider who covers the Hokies thinks the biggest question facing Virginia Tech is in their secondary.
Virginia Tech’s secondary is a concern exiting the spring
Evan Watkins of 247Sports sees the Hokies’ safety position as a concern leaving spring practices and thinks they need to address that.
“The biggest question for Virginia Tech is at safety. Jalen Stroman returns, but he has an injury history and a tendency to attract targeting calls. Lining up beside him could be a converted wide receiver (Jalen Jones), rising sophomore Mose Phillips or true freshman Quentin Reddish. There is not a lot of experience in the room. One option for the Hokies could be to shift Mansoor Delane back to safety, but that takes away one of the top cover corners in the conference, and the depth at corner could be too much of a drop off to do that.”
There certainly are questions as to how Virginia Tech is going to address that once camp begins. Stroman does have an injury history and moving Delane there, however, that puts more pressure on their depth and takes away one of their top cover corners against some of the better teams that are good at wide receiver. It would be big for Pry and defensive coordinator Chris Marve if Phillips can take the next step to handle that position, while one of the more interesting options is Reddish and just how quickly he can develop into playing that spot.
The transfer portal is still another option for Pry to address the depth at safety, but once camp begins, that is certainly going to be one position to keep an eye on as it goes along.
