Just like over the winter, you can say that the spring transfer portal was a success for the Virginia Tech football team and head coach Brent Pry. Actually, it was successful for many reasons for anyone who was paying attention.
Over the winter, the Hokies added key additions Aeneas Peebles from Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College, and Sam Brumfield from Middle Tennessee State on defense, while adding offensive lineman Montavious Cunningham. Part of the reason for not adding too many players was because Pry got a ton of retainment on both sides of the ball going into 2024.
When the spring portal opened last month, Virginia Tech lost backup quarterback Dylan Wittke, who ended up committing to Minnesota, and other young players. There were no losses to their depth chart and they filled two needs, but apparently, that didn’t stop them from almost (F)ailing in one writer’s eyes.
Virginia Tech receives a D for the spring transfer portal
Rivals released their grades for the spring transfer portal for all ACC schools and they the Hokies a D which is rather stunning. It’s stunning for many different reasons, to be honest.
First off, yes, Pry had needs in the portal, but not as many as the previous seasons because of all the retainment and how deep their depth charts are now. Before Wittke left in the portal, Pry said that they were going to look at adding a QB in the portal and they got Collin Schlee from UCLA to commit to battle Pop Watson in camp over the summer to be the backup to Kyron Drones. Then last week, Virginia Tech got more depth along the defensive line with Alabama transfer Khurtiss Perry. Saturday night, Miami transfer Kaleb Spencer, a defensive back/linebacker, committed to the Hokies.
Virginia Tech had very few needs and a lot of that has to do with the retainment that they got over the winter between their Thanksgiving Weekend win over Virginia that made them bowl-eligible and the winter portal additions. They filled the two biggest needs they had in the spring and they somehow, someway, got a D. That’s insane and really laughable if you sit back and think about it.
