Nebraska are hiring new staff this weekend including another pro coach following the departure of Evan Cooper, says Matt Rhule.

The Huskers have quickly zeroed in on their new defensive backs coach.

Nebraska has narrowed its focus on a new secondary coach, as the Huskers are set to hire former Penn State and Minnesota secondary coach John Butler to replace Evan Cooper, per a report.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported early Saturday morning that Butler is expected to be hired to replace Cooper, who resigned earlier this week for personal reasons.

Butler brings an impressive resume to Nebraska, having spent time most recently as the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2018 to 2023.

Before that, Butler was the secondary coach with the Houston Texans from 2014-17 and Penn State’s secondary coach in 2012 and 2013 under Bill O’Brien. He added the defensive coordinator title in 2013 as well.

Earlier in his career, Butler did stints as the Minnesota from 2007-10 as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach.
