Former Chiefs TE Irv Smith Jr. didn’t last long in Kansas City but is reportedly on the verge of landing a new job, working out with the New England Patriots on Friday prior to Week 1.
The Patriots’ season got off to a spectacular start, taking down the “vaunted” Bengals on the road with Cincinnati preparing to come to Kansas City in Week 2, and Smith Jr. could be a valuable addition to a passing game that needs some juice.
It’s unclear whether or not Jerod Mayo’s group will sign Smith Jr., but he’s certainly one step closer to getting back on an NFL roster.

Entering his fourth season in the league, Smith Jr. has established himself as a dangerous pass-catcher with strong blocking chops as well.
He’s averaged 8.9 yards per reception with 10 TDs over his career, and New England’s receivers are perhaps the worst in the NFL. Their tight ends don’t inspire much hope, and Jacoby Brissett generally played poorly despite picking up the win.
Smith Jr. isn’t the only recently released Chief who is landing workouts, but he might be the most likely to soon land a job. At six-foot-two and 240 pounds, he’s a dynamic talent that could help lift the Patriots’ offense.
The Chiefs aren’t concerned with Smith Jr.’s future landing spot, especially after signing Noah Gray to an extension and drafting Jared Wiley. He deserves to find another opportunity in the league and it seems he may have found just that with a once-great franchise.
