Enzo Maresca has confirmed the imminent arrival of Yunus Akgun at Leicester City to end the club’s long hunt for a new right-sided winger.
Turkish international Akgun is set to join on loan from Galatasaray and will give Maresca a new attacking talent to work with, City keen to strengthen on the right after buying Stephy Mavididi to play on the left earlier this month.
City have used academy graduates Wanya Marcal and Kasey McAteer on the right this season, with the latter’s double earning the win over Rotherham to keep up the perfect start and send the team top. But Maresca will soon have another option to choose from.
Asked if City were about to sign Akgun, Maresca said: “The only thing I can say is that he is a good player and the reason why we decide for him is because we like him. Hopefully soon he can help us to win games and play in the right way.”
City want another new winger and a defender before the window closes on Friday, but even though their squad is not yet complete, they are still winning games.
In all four Championship outings, they have scored in the final 20 minutes to clinch three points, with McAteer on target five minutes from the end at the New York Stadium.
“It was a very good performance from my point of view,” Maresca said. “Against this type of time, how we deal with set-pieces because they score many goals from set-pieces, the delivery from Cafu is unbelievable and I think we did very good. Every time they went for a long ball, we fought in the right way.
“On the ball, we could play even more, probably the last 20 minutes was when we played many passes. In the end, the process of giving many passes allowed us to get into the final third better.
“(Late goals) happened already four times but probably in the future we are going to lose a game in the last 10 minutes also. That’s football.
“In the way we play, because we try to keep the ball for a long time, it’s normal that for the last 20 minutes, we have more control in the game.”
