Ian Maatsen’s decision to stay at Chelsea could have ramifications for Marc Cucurella.
That is according to journalist Rudy Galetti.
After Ian Maatsen‘s decision to reject a return to Burnley and remain in west London, Galetti has told Tribal Football that Marc Cucurella “could leave” Mauricio Pochettino’s side next summer.
With the 21-year-old opting to stay at Chelsea, the Blues now have three natural left-backs.
Levi Colwill has also been playing on the left side of their defence this season, so it is quite clear that Pochettino has too many options right now, making it no surprise that Cucurella could leave.
Marc Cucurella reinventing himself
Cucurella has started at right-back in the Blues’ last couple of games, so perhaps that could be a way for him to get minutes now and in the future.
Chelsea, of course, have Reece James and Malo Gusto for the position, so it is not like they are light there either.
But the former is missing so many games these days because of injuries, so there is a chance that Cucurella would get minutes at Stamford Bridge even as a third-choice right-back if he does remain in west London.
But if he wants more than that and to be starting in his normal position on the opposite flank, then he is probably going to have to leave Chelsea next year.
It is not impossible, especially if Cucurella is converted into a right-back, that Chelsea keep hold of the 25-year-old Spaniard and Maatsen. But you would expect one to leave at some point, as there are too many full-backs at the club at the minute.
