Newcastle could spoil Liverpool’s plans to land €70m playmaker.

According to the Athletic (subscription required), Liverpool are exploring a move to sign RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai this summer window.

The report reveals that the Reds met with the player’s representatives this week in view of making an offer. Any deal would be tough to get over the line and the club has accepted that fact (weird!).

The Hungary international, whose current deal at Leipzig lasts until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt), has a release clause of Є70m. There are conflicting claims about when the clause expires.

Evening Standard has stated that Newcastle United are also in the race to sign Szoboszlai. Liverpool’s interest in the player may scupper their plans.

The Magpies should not be bothered because we cannot see Liverpool spending that much on a player in a summer window where they do not have Champions League money.

Moreover, we do not expect a heavy player sale activity that could get some money in to make the signings. Under FSG, the Reds only spend big when they have sold a player at a good price or hit a jackpot or something.

Hence, it is hinted in the original report that the club is accepting the Szoboszlai deal to be complicated for them to get over the line.

The 22-year-old has been an exceptional player for Leipzig since arriving there from fellow Red Bull side Salzburg in January 2021. He scored 10 and assisted 13 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions for the German club last season.
